Everyone makes mistakes sometimes including in the reef keeping hobby. Recently, I turned the light on my nano reef on to shoot some time lapse video and forgot to turn it off for an entire week! Woops
The important thing to learn from these mistakes, however, is that everyone makes them and everyone has to learn how to bounce back from them. The most important part of this process is to stay calm and maintain stability. It’s hard not to panic when things start to go wrong, but very often, in the face of a mistake, the best route forward is to continue on your tank maintenance schedule and let the reef ride it out.
In my case, I simply turned the lights down a bit to arrest coral bleaching and have continued to do my normal maintenance. This provides the most continued stability as the reef begins to heal and return to normal.
